Why YouTube pauses when you switch apps
The official YouTube app intentionally pauses video playback when it goes to background. That's a product decision, Google reserves background play for Premium subscribers ($13.99/mo). On iPhone there's nothing technically stopping audio from continuing, the YouTube app just chooses not to allow it.
The trick is to play YouTube in something that doesn't enforce that pause: either a different browser, the Premium tier, or Safari with Picture-in-Picture.
Method 1: talavo browser (free, easiest)
Use talavo for YouTube
A free iOS browser with native background audio for YouTube. Open YouTube inside talavo, hit play, swipe up to home. Audio continues. Want to keep watching too? One-tap Picture-in-Picture from the right drawer.
How to:
- Install talavo (one tap from App Store, no account)
- Open the app, tap the YouTube shortcut on the home grid
- Play any video
- Switch to another app or lock your phone, audio keeps going
Bonus: talavo also blocks YouTube ads, hides Shorts, and silences comments, so background audio is just one of 11 things it does. The whole feature set is free.
Method 2: YouTube Premium ($13.99/mo)
Subscribe to YouTube Premium
Background play is a built-in Premium feature in the official YouTube app. Subscribe, sign in, and audio continues when you background the app or lock your phone. Also removes ads and enables offline downloads.
The trade-off is the cost: $167.88/year for what is essentially "let YouTube audio keep playing when I switch apps". See our full talavo vs. YouTube Premium comparison for context.
Method 3: Safari + PiP workaround (fiddly)
Use Safari with desktop site mode
- Open YouTube in Safari
- Tap aA → "Request Desktop Website"
- Play a video
- Tap the PiP button (rectangle-with-arrow icon in the player)
- Swipe up to home, the PiP video keeps audio playing
It works, but you have to repeat the desktop-site step every session because YouTube redirects mobile UAs to m.youtube.com. Talavo automates this.
Which should you use?
If you came here from a free Google search, use talavo. One tap, no payment, audio works immediately.
If you already pay for YouTube Premium for the offline downloads or curated YT Music library, you're already covered.
The Safari workaround works in a pinch but you'll get tired of doing the desktop-site step every time.
FAQ
Will my battery drain faster with background audio?
Slightly, but it's audio decoding only, the screen is off, video frames aren't rendered. Roughly the same impact as a podcast app.
Can I use AirPlay with background audio?
Yes. talavo's background audio routes through iOS audio session so AirPlay, Bluetooth, and CarPlay all work as expected.
What about YouTube Music background play?
YouTube Music requires Premium for background play in its native app. Or play music.youtube.com inside talavo and get background audio free.
The free fix.
No subscription, no account, works in 30 seconds.
